Excel is the key personal analytical tool in Microsoft’s suite of products for many years. Advanced mathematical and statistical functions are available out of the box. The focus of the training is the theoretical concepts of data mining. The importance for the attendees to fully understand them is the first training goal.  The software part is used just for showing the concepts and enriching the concept with examples. It helps a lot in understanding how to work with data, how to prepare useful derived variables, or to smooth values of a variable appropriately, or to discretize them correctly, etc. Attendees can and should be able to use different tools in the future (SPSS, for example, is even more powerful for these task than MS tools). However, we plan to explain in details how to use statistics for data overview, how to prepare different derived variables, how to measure the information in variables, etc. Once the attendees understand the data preparation concepts, the algorithms and their typical usage, they could use any software to do the job.

SQL Server is the database engine, we use it just to hold the data examples, the Excel is a product they are very familiar with, and the R is universal statistical and data analysis language. Azure machine learning is a cloud service for data analysis, used in our training to show some of the algorithms and gain fast results and last but not least to avoid installing additional software. We use SQL Server Analysis Services to sow the data mining concepts, train the data and visually represent the models results. We use an easy to work with visual and fast processing Microsoft platform SSAS and this is the easiest platform we can use to train people on data mining. Again, no enforcing MS tools; however, we want to enforce learning of important tasks.
