This course is designed for experienced SQL professionals seeking to design, optimize, and operate high-performance data warehouse solutions using Microsoft Fabric. It provides comprehensive guidance on workload architecture, data modeling, query performance optimization, migration strategies, monitoring, and operational best practices. Through a combination of instructor-led demonstrations, guided exercises, and hands-on labs, participants develop the skills required to build scalable, production-ready Microsoft Fabric Warehouse solutions.
Using realistic enterprise scenarios and a dedicated Microsoft Fabric environment, attendees gain hands-on experience in designing and tuning analytical workloads while applying proven architectural patterns and performance optimization techniques.
- Database administrators moving from on-prem SQL Server or Azure SQL to Fabric
- Data engineers who need to architect medallion warehouses on the Fabric platform.
- BI developers and analytics engineers building reporting layers on top of Fabric Warehouse.
- Solution architects evaluating Fabric Warehouse against Synapse dedicated/serverless pools, Azure SQL DB, or Databricks SQL Warehouse.
- Migration leads planning the move from Synapse SQL pools or on-prem DW estates.
PREREQUISITES:
- Working knowledge of T-SQL, query plans, and indexing fundamentals
- Familiarity with Power BI Desktop (basic level — model, visualize, refresh)
- Laptop with browser, Power BI Desktop, optionally SSMS or VS Code with the SQL extension
- A Microsoft account (a per-attendee Fabric workspace is provisioned for the course)
No prior Fabric experience required. No Spark or Python required.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Provision and size a Fabric Warehouse from zero in your lab workload.
- Read and write Fabric T-SQL fluently – including the gotchas (no FK, no triggers, no materialized views, snapshot isolation only, IDENTITY BIGINT only, OPENROWSET literal-URL constraint, MERGE label-drop quirk).
- Build a complete medallion warehouse — bronze → silver → gold – with measurable performance at each layer.
- Diagnose any slow query using queryinsights DMVs as fluently as you currently use sys.dm_exec_requests.
- Choose the right semantic-model storage mode (DirectQuery / Direct Lake / Import) for the workload.
- Discover all the possibilities for deployment and shipping Ship warehouse changes, like Workspace Git + Deployment Pipelines, SQL Project, T-SQL Notebook and Python, PowerShell, and know your options, be prepared how to do it without breaking dependent items.
- Operate a Fabric capacity, recognize the three throttling tiers, and observe them live in Capacity Metrics.
- Mirror an Azure SQL database into Fabric and query it alongside warehouse tables via 3-part name.
- Migrate an existing warehouse to Fabric using DACPAC + the Upgrade Wizard – with a documented walkthrough of what the wizard auto-translates vs flags for manual review.
